Premier - Monash Children’s Hospital School Opens

15 October 2017

Sick children in Melbourne’s south-east now have access to a world class education while continuing life-saving medical treatment, with the official opening of the state-of-the-art Monash Children’s Hospital School.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino today opened the $6.8 million school for children and young people with chronic medical or mental health issues who are at-risk of disengaging from education, or unable to attend their regular school.

Teachers will deliver classes right throughout the hospital – at students’ bedsides, in small activity rooms and in central ward areas – as well as in four purpose-designed classrooms and a specialist art room.

The classrooms feature hot-desk areas and are equipped with cameras and the latest technology to enable students to virtually connect with teachers and classmates at their regular school and with their families at home.

The school has capacity to provide an education to about 170 students a day.

The $250 million Monash Children’s Hospital opened its doors earlier this year, and provides life-saving care to kids in Melbourne’s south-east, the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.

The Andrews Labor Government is building the Education State so that every student can access a great local school and get a great education, and has invested $2.5 billion in the past three Budgets to improve classrooms, upgrade facilities and build new schools across the state.

This school building boom has also delivered more than 1,000 school upgrades and supported almost 5000 construction jobs for Victorians.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“All kids deserve a great education and access to a great school, but for some students poor health makes it impossible for them to get to school each day.”

“Being in out and of hospital is tough on kids – not only do they miss their friends but it can be hard to keep up with their school work – this school will help them stay connected and keep on top of their studies.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education James Merlino

“Evidence shows young people and children who miss out on school for extended periods are reluctant to return – this new school will help keep students engaged while they get better and ensure they don’t fall behind.”

“The new Monash Children’s Hospital School is yet another way we’re building the Education State to benefit all Victorians.”
